How and Why You Should Put Yourself Out There

How and Why You Should Put Yourself Out There

Since becoming an artist and starting my small business late in 2021, I’ve had plenty of people say to me, “I wish I could do what you are doing” or “I’d love to start a business, but....”.

I 100% get it. If you had asked me early 2021 if I would be an artist and small business owner by later that year I would not have believed you.

Starting a business is risky for so many reasons. More so if the business idea requires significant investment of money and time, or if you have a family to financially support. You also have your reputation, and let’s be real, most people worry about what other people will think of them, especially if the business fails.

I have this saying that I recall every time I am questioning whether to do something out of my comfort zone, make a big change or attempt a new goal.

“Will I look back and regret I didn’t do XXX?”

If the answer if yes, then that gives me some guidance as to the direction I need to go.

There is of course loads of practicalities to think through and I definitely do not suggest throwing caution to the wind and quitting your job, but I will leave the pragmatisms for another post.

I’m still very early in my art and business journey, and of course I still have plenty of moments where I don’t want to put myself out there. Like social media videos and reels. Argh - putting photos of myself out there is still a push! But one thing I have learnt is, everything is possible with baby steps. For example, to overcome my fears about putting myself out there on social media, I’ve started with photos and videos where I am not talking. This is big for me. I will get there, but each step may take time.

And sales conversations - I am a still a bumbling mess! So my current approach is online sales chats and I am working towards building my self-assurance for face-to-face interactions. When I occasionally need to visit a customer I am so nervous, but each time is getting easier. I take some deep breathes before I step out of the car, and push myself to “just do it” knowing it will get easier and easier.

Do you have goals or dreams but are afraid to put yourself out there? You are not alone. I’d love to hear about it! Send me an email about your experience and idea – perhaps I can share more thoughts of how you can take the baby steps to put yourself out there and live your dreams!

All the best to you, Sara

P.S Speaking of putting yourself out there, my first ever (!!) Holiday Season/Christmas greeting card collection has been released! You can check out the range here - why not give you family and friends a thoughtfully designed artful card from a local artist this year?
